Mission Call Opening Ideas — Making the Moment Memorable

Fun, meaningful ideas for your missionary's mission call opening — from traditions families love to ways to include everyone, near and far.

Opening a mission call is one of those moments a family never forgets. The missionary has been waiting weeks. Everyone has a guess. The envelope finally comes out — and for a few seconds, nobody knows where this person's life is about to take them.

It doesn't take much to make that moment special. But a little planning goes a long way.

Invite More People Than You Think

Mission calls have a way of bringing people together. Don't limit the guest list. Invite neighbors, ward friends, old seminary teachers, cousins who live across the country. The more people who share the moment, the more meaningful it becomes.

For people who can't be there in person, set up a phone or tablet on a tripod so they can watch live. Even better — find a way to let them participate in the guessing, not just watch.

Make the Guessing Part of the Fun

The guessing is half the experience. Here are a few ways families do it:

The paper map tradition — Print or buy a large world map, pass around a marker, and have everyone write their name on their guess. Simple, tactile, and fun to look back on later.

Voting slips — Write guesses on small pieces of paper and collect them in a bowl. Read them aloud before the envelope opens.

Live digital guessing — If you want everyone — including remote guests — to participate equally, tools like Mission Call Map let guests drop a pin on a live world map from their phones. Every guess shows up in real time on your TV, and when the envelope opens it scores everyone by distance. It's the paper map tradition, updated for the whole room.

Set Up a Big Screen

Whatever you do, make sure the whole room can see the moment together. Connect a laptop to your TV. If you're doing a map of any kind — paper or digital — make sure it's big enough for everyone to gather around.

If you have guests joining remotely, consider screen sharing so they see exactly what the room sees.

Capture It Well

You'll want to remember this. A few things that help:

  • Designate one person as the photographer so everyone else can just be present
  • Set up a second phone on a tripod for a wide room shot — the reactions are often better than the reveal itself
  • Record a short video of the missionary reading the call out loud, not just the moment they open it

Add Meaning Beyond the Moment

The call itself is exciting, but there are small things that make it more than just a guessing game:

Letters and notes — Ask guests ahead of time to bring a note of encouragement for the missionary. Collect them in a box or journal they can take into the MTC.

A message with the guess — If you're using a digital tool, Mission Call Map lets guests leave a short message for the missionary alongside their guess. It becomes something they can read later.

A mission prep gift table — Some families set out a small table where guests can leave practical mission gifts — a journal, a tie, a favorite snack. Keep it low-key, not a registry.

Food Ideas

Keep it simple and celebratory. A few ideas:

  • A cake or cookies decorated with a world map
  • Foods from a few different countries (you won't know which one to feature until the envelope opens — so lean into the mystery)
  • A dessert bar where guests vote with their plates — "I think it's Europe" gets the croissants, "I think it's South America" gets the churros

After the Call Is Read

Don't let the energy die when the envelope closes. A few things to do in the minutes after:

  • Pull up the mission's website or Facebook page so the room can see pictures
  • Look up where the mission boundaries are on a map
  • Let the missionary read a few of the notes and messages people left
  • Take a group photo with the call letter

One Last Thing

These moments go fast. The missionary will be in the MTC before you know it. Whatever you plan, leave room for it to just be a moment — unscripted, a little chaotic, full of people who love your missionary.

That's the whole point.
